AfrikaBurn

2011-02-14

Festivals are fun, but AfrikaBurn could change your life. In the middle of the Tankwa Karoo lies the dusty canvas for immediate creativity and self-expression by a community that forms annually in an extreme environment.

AfrikaBurn is extreme in every sense. This art festival is not for the faint-hearted, as the 5-day event is set up on the longest South African road without a town.  No cell phone reception, no shops – just dust and open space. Participants need to be completely self-reliant as the festival is strictly non-commercial. There are no commercial transactions at the festival, so if you need it – bring it and if you feel like giving - don’t expect anything in return.

Whatever you find in this desolated spot of desert is created by the community and the there are amazing things to discover. The whole festival functions on a communal effort in which every individual makes a contribution by gifting, creating art, performing or volunteering. The unique dynamic of AfrikaBurn can hardly be described – it needs to be experienced. Venture into a huge playground for creative minds. The things you will experience and the people you will meet here are as original as they are inspiring. The festival culminates in the burning of some of the large art installations.

The event has a leave no trace policy – so once the festival is over, you will find nothing but dust, wind and hot, hot sun.
