Balkanology in Cape Town
2011-01-19It’s amazing what an electro beat mixed with a fiddled melody can do to you. If you thought you didn’t enjoy dancing, Balkonology’s mix of driving beats with Balkan and gypsy beats will easily change your mind. The Balkanology collective throws parties that blend Burlesque with rural Eastern Europe. The innovative approach to traditional Balkan, gypsy and swing melodies makes for fun dancing sessions, which easily last until the early morning.
The Balkanology parties take place irregularly, but are eagerly anticipated by a loyal following. Behind the entrance awaits a world of thick moustaches, burlesque costumes and maybe even some sheep or chickens. The DJs Toby2shoes and Maoriginal have coined a mix of electro beats and Gypsy, Serbian, Macedonian, Bulgarian and Romanian melodies. The parties have themes such as “War & Peace” or “The Great Balkan Wedding” and come with decorations and show elements that turn these parties into celebrations dance and music.
