Spring Flowers of the Western Cape

2010-08-13

It’s springtime and South Africa’s West Coast has thrown on its Sunday suit! Venture into an area that is dominated by little fishing villages and pristine beaches to find the Western Cape’s floral kingdom at its best.

While most of Cape Town’s visitors continue their journey towards the Garden Route in the East, you will find that the West Coast has rugged beauty on a less beaten track. If you are looking for some peace and quiet with the seaside tranquillity of quaint fishing town and endless beaches, you will enjoy the West Cost at any time of year. In spring however the colour of wildflowers bursts all over the area north of the Mother City. You will find yourself surrounded by oceans of rich yellow, orange and violet colour while you are stuck between serene Atlantic beaches and famous wine farms. Could a weekend away be any better?

West Coast National Park

An hour north of Cape Town the West Coast National Park protects the rich flora and birdlife of the Langebaan Lagoon. In August and September the floral carpets join with the endless beaches and create magical setting to view the diverse birdlife and some elusive antelope.

Swartland

The Swartland is an area starting 50km north of Cape Town. In tranquil valleys you will escape the stress of city living and find prestigious wine farms, sunny skies and wildflowers. The N7 will take you right into the heart of this lovely and authentic part of the Western Cape. The charming towns of Citrusdal and Clanwilliam are rewarding stops along the way or take a detour through Ceres to experience the spectacular Gydo mountain pass.

Darling Flower Show

Another Swartland town with spectacular wildflowers is Darling. A renowned wine producing area, this town host the annual Darling Wildflower Show. The diversity of the area’s floral kingdom will be showcased in a large hall, while the show also includes a display of gardening related exhibits and a lecturing hall. The proceeds will be used for the conservation of the indigenous wildflowers.
