Teachers for Africa -volunteering

Volunteer projects

The volunteer projects of the Teachers for Africa Foundation are by definition small-scale, which makes a personal approach by the volunteer during the project both possible and advisable.

By participating in one of the volunteer projects, you support our various sponsor projects both directly and indirectly. Volunteer work also helps to warrant the future continuity of the various projects.

A short impression of our different volunteer work projects in South-Africa

 Educational volunteer project "English Literacy"

This highly structured volunteer project runs in various schools in Cape Town. The volunteer gives intensive assistance to various disadvantaged young pupils learning the English language. This is partly realised by providing one-on-one teaching and participating in different reading programmes. For these pupils, English is their second or third language, so special teaching or English language qualifications are not required for volunteering, but volunteers must have a fairly good pronunciation of the English language. Project duration 4 weeks or longer.

Volunteer projects for the children of Imizamo Yethu Township, Houtbay (Cape Town)

  • OranjeKloof Moravian Primary School, Houtbay, has around 1100 pupils between 7 and 14 years old and most of them live in the I.Y. Township. During the project in this school, the volunteer will assist in/teach computer skills classes and/or one-on-one teaching of English. In addition, the volunteer assists with out-of-school activities, such as sports, drama, music, help with homework and various other teaching opportunities. Project duration 4 weeks or longer.
  • Houtbay Secondary School. This High School is a public school with around 700 pupils in the age range of 14-18 years, mostly from I.Y Township and the colored community in Houtbay. During this educational project, the volunteer will provide intensive assistance/classroom teaching to pupils. Teaching is possible in various subjects depending on the qualifications of the volunteer. In addition, the volunteer will also help with homework assignments after school, and may provide coaching to various pupils. Project duration 4 weeks or longer.

Volunteer project B.E.S.T., Cape Town

At this small training centre/school, near the centre of Cape Town, the majority of pupils are adolescents (15-20 years), who were forced to leave school at an early age, and are now given the opportunity to continue their education. For most participants, the project will be their last chance of completing an education and improving their outlook.

In this project, known as B.E.S.T. (Basic Education and Skills Training), the volunteer will give intensive assistance to the pupils in a range of subjects but mostly focused on the English language. Project duration 4/6 weeks or longer, depending on the activities.

Volunteer project in Wynberg Girls Home, near Cape Town

This shelter offers emergency accommodation for neglected girls who have been placed in custody by the government. During this project, the volunteer helps with caring for the girls, helps them with their homework, and especially, the volunteer will organise many creative activities. Project duration 4 weeks or longer.

Volunteer project Yellow Elephant, Acornhoek, province Limpopo (KrugerPark)

The Yellow Elephant School works together with the local population, and offers children aged 6 to 18 years education in English. They fill a need, because the local government schools pay too little attention to English, mainly teaching the curriculum in the tribal language. However, proficiency in English is a must for these children, since it will be of great importance for their future.

The children of the Yellow Elephant School Project deserve all the attention and effort of volunteers who can work independently in one of the most beautiful areas of South Africa. Project duration 4 weeks or longer.
